March Bottle of the Month: 2023 Super Tuscan
Each month at Carruth Cellars we feature a special wine for our members, and for March we are excited to highlight the 2023 Super Tuscan from Sonoma County. This wine marks the return of a style we have not released since 2018 and brings together Old World inspiration with California fruit.
If you enjoy medium bodied red wines with bright fruit and layered complexity, this is a bottle worth getting to know.
What Is a Super Tuscan?
The term Super Tuscan originated in Tuscany, Italy and describes wines that blend Sangiovese with classic French varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The result is a wine that combines the vibrant acidity of Italian wines with the structure and richness of Bordeaux style blends. 23 Super Tuscan
Our 2023 Super Tuscan follows that tradition with a thoughtfully crafted blend of:
• 60 percent Sangiovese
• 15 percent Merlot
• 10 percent Malbec
• 10 percent Cabernet Franc
• 5 percent Syrah 23 Super Tuscan
The majority of the fruit comes from Alexander Valley in Sonoma County, where vineyards stretch from the valley floor into the slopes of the Mayacama Mountains, helping create wines with depth and structure.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 vintage lands squarely in the medium bodied red wine category with a vibrant and balanced finish.
Expect flavors and aromas of:
• Strawberry
• Cranberry
• Plum
• Leather
• Cedar
The result is a wine that is approachable, food friendly, and easy to enjoy whether you are opening it at home or sharing a bottle with friends at one of our tasting rooms.
The 2023 Vintage
Vintners across California are celebrating the 2023 vintage as exceptional. Record winter rainfall revitalized vineyard soils while cooler spring and summer temperatures allowed grapes to develop gradually and retain excellent balance.
After harvest, the fruit was fermented separately for about two weeks before aging in barrel for roughly 20 months. Our winemaker then carefully blended each varietal to create the final wine before bottling in July 2025.
